Good book, and despite the deviations from the book, decent movie.
One thing that the movie got terribly, horribly wrong is that the title fucking means something - it’s not just some words strung together randomly, nor is it just a vague description of the protagonist.
The book starts off with the monsters - vampires, not zombies; the movie was crap in describing what they actually were - as being, well, monsters. As in, the stuff of legends. Neville takes it upon himself to find a cure for vampirism; until that happens, he kills them because, you know, vampires.
By the end of the book, he realizes that these vampires aren’t really monsters. In the absence of human civilization, they’ve formed their own. They live, they eat, they die, they feel, and most importantly, they fear. What do they fear? They fear the monster who comes in the daylight and murders them, the monster who aims to take away their very nature.
Neville’s last thought is that he is now this monster of legend, and *bam*, there’s your title.
So yeah, the movie fucked up. The alternate version stays closer to the basic premise of the book, but it’s still a bit off.
